What is stakeholder involvement/engagement?

Stakeholder involvement refers to the involvement of key individuals and organisations in strategic decisions about health and social care at regional level, for example in influencing priorities.

What is Personal and Public Involvement (PPI)?

Involving individuals who use services in plans and decisions about their specific care or treatment needs is an integral part of PPI. PPI is also about involving local communities or the general population where the issues are of broad public concern or interest, such as the location or nature of local services. It is about building capacity so that the public have greater confidence and more opportunity to influence the planning, commissioning and delivery of services in ways that are relevant and meaningful to them.

Why should stakeholder involvement be mainstreamed in Health and Social Care (HSC)?

It is essential that stakeholder involvement is integrated into the everyday planning, provision and evaluation of HSC services. Mainstreaming stakeholder involvement has the potential to help change the culture of HSC. It could, if done properly, be the way that HSC becomes truly centred on what matters to service users. Also, if done well, it could ensure that what patients say makes a real difference to people’s health and lives.

What is the stakeholder involvement programme?

The stakeholder involvement programme was established by DHSSPS to act as a focal point for HSC organisations to share good ideas on involvement, to promote the value of involving, and to work with HSC organisations to build on the foundations of noteworthy practice already in place throughout Northern Ireland.

The work of the programme includes:

establishing a network of stakeholders linked to existing networks in order to create a regional system that adds value to all who participate;

creating an e-network that enables the stakeholder network to identify and prioritise regional themes;

carrying out research, including a Public Attitudes Survey, on the views of service users and the public in relation to HSC services to inform policy and actions at a strategic level.

How will the programme provide resources?

This will be done by:

interactive web-based information;

update bulletins;

publications, guidance, templates and self assessment tools;

a discussion forum – a conduit for delivering messages to a virtual network.

What is the purpose of the e-network?

To enable network members to identify and prioritise regional themes through a discussion forum which can ultimately inform Priorities for Action.

To share information, resources and best practice.

What resources does this website provide?

The website will provide useful resources such as:

evidence about what works;

models of good practice;

a process to influence Priorities for Action – through a discussion forum.

Who can join the network?

The network is open to representatives from organisations or groups who have an interest in improving health and wellbeing and/or stakeholder involvement.

How can I join the network?

If you meet the criteria above, simply complete a registration form. Once your form has been received and verified, you will receive confirmation of membership and your details will be included on this website.

Do I have to be a member of the network to join the discussion forum?

You do not have to be a member of the stakeholder network to participate in the discussion forum. By registering with the discussion forum you will be able to join in with debates with others who are facing similar involvement challenges.

Who are the other network members?

The Network Members section of the website gives details of all network members.

How can I find out about network events?

Once you become a registered network member, you will receive invitations to attend network events. Details of network events can also be found on this website.

Is the work paid?

Network members are not paid for their involvement. We will pay travel expenses related to network events if these are not being met by the parent organisation.
