Stakeholder involvement refers to the involvement of key individuals and organisations in strategic decisions about health and social care at regional level, for example in influencing priorities.
Involving individuals who use services in plans and decisions about their specific care or treatment needs is an integral part of PPI. PPI is also about involving local communities or the general population where the issues are of broad public concern or interest, such as the location or nature of local services. It is about building capacity so that the public have greater confidence and more opportunity to influence the planning, commissioning and delivery of services in ways that are relevant and meaningful to them.
It is essential that stakeholder involvement is integrated into the everyday planning, provision and evaluation of HSC services. Mainstreaming stakeholder involvement has the potential to help change the culture of HSC. It could, if done properly, be the way that HSC becomes truly centred on what matters to service users. Also, if done well, it could ensure that what patients say makes a real difference to people’s health and lives.
The stakeholder involvement programme was established by DHSSPS to act as a focal point for HSC organisations to share good ideas on involvement, to promote the value of involving, and to work with HSC organisations to build on the foundations of noteworthy practice already in place throughout Northern Ireland.
