Description:
Belfast Health Action Zone (HAZ) was set up in 1999 and is a partnership involving statutory, community, voluntary and private sector organisations working to address inequalities in health and wellbeing. This work is premised on a broad social model of health, which recognises that the major determinants of health inequality lie outside the provision of formal health and social care systems and can only be addressed by working in partnership with those who can impact on the wider determinants of health status such as low educational attainment, unemployment, poor housing, dependency on benefits.
The HAZ focused activity in North and West Belfast as a result of the concentration of disadvantage and need in this part of the city. A decision of HAZ Council was taken in June 2007 to encompass other areas and themes of need working across the city. A consultation on the content of any future programme will take place in late 2007/early 2008.
