Description:
In 2005, Fleming Fulton School, Belfast, set up an inter-disciplinary working party in response to the current legislation on Special Education and Guidelines for Special Schools.
The working party submitted an application to The Big Lottery Fund and the school was awarded £500,000 to develop a four year project for children and young people.
The outcome is the development of The Lilac Project – a Support and Advice Centre for children and young people aged 2-19 with physical disabilities and associated learning needs.
The aim is to facilitate the inclusion of these pupils in the school of their choice.
The team is a partnership between education and health consisting of a teacher (inclusion coordinator), occupational therapist, classroom assistant, ICT technician and clerical officer.
The multi-disciplinary input given may range from advice to full school support throughout the academic year and school career, depending on the specific needs of the pupil.
This service is available to all schools in Northern Ireland.
